The need

Why socks matter so much

For someone sleeping rough, feet take a battering. People walk long distances every day, often in worn-out shoes, and have few chances to dry out or change.

Wet socks quickly lead to blisters, cold feet and painful infections. A fresh, dry pair is one of the simplest ways to help someone stay healthy through the winter.

Socks are also one of the items homeless services find hardest to get. Second-hand socks can’t be given out, so every pair has to be new. That’s why a box of brand-new socks is so welcome.

Our charity partner

Stonepillow

Stonepillow is a homelessness charity in West Sussex, supporting people in the Chichester and Arun districts. It was founded in 1989 by the congregation of St Richard’s Catholic Church in Chichester, after the death of a homeless man in the city.

Its promise is simple: “We don’t turn anyone away.” Stonepillow gives practical support and helps people take steps towards better health, a home and work, so they can build stable, independent lives.

Every pair of socks from the Box of Socks goes to Stonepillow to hand out to the people they help.
